about

As we move deep into the early hours of the morning we experience yet more interesting activity, consisting predominantly of spherics, whistlers, chorus and steady hiss. The nature of the chorus activity changes abruptly at minute 04:00. The usual warbling sounds are replaced by strong rising tones which persist until minute 06:00. Later, some of the whistlers generate triggered emissions, with particularly good examples at minutes 07:18 and 08:53. The steady hiss is replaced by the more spooky variable hiss from minute 10:00 and there are further good examples of triggered emissions at minutes 10:37, 11:03, 11:28 and 11:50.
This piece, which shares the name of the project, lasts the long hours of the night from 1.35am till 4.45 am. The piano is therefore simple, returning to our earlier key of B minor in a conscious response to track 3. Things are slower and at rest ready now for us as the observer of these strong rising tones. We imagine that if we were listening at Halley it would be difficult to stay awake despite the beauty of the soundscape which seems almost electrically charged.
