Sonic Rain 4.45 AM

from Aurora Musicalis by Sounds of Space Project

about

This early morning interval starts with a rich selection of ‘sounds’, including spherics, whistlers, chorus and variable hiss. There is a fine example of a strong whistler resulting in a triggered emission at minute 01:38. The chorus activity subsides after minute 01:00 and is largely absent after minute 02:00 leaving us with a period of spherics, whistlers and steady hiss. The whistlers become less frequent after minute 06:00 and the piece ends gently with an interval of steady hiss and ever present spherics.
In planning this improvisation Kim thought of the great Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo’s master poem Savitri, which starts with the phrase “It was the hour before the Gods awake”. The time between 4 and 5 am is beloved of many religious and spiritual traditions and it has inspired this piece. There is so much melodic content in this 'sound' that the piano retreats from this area, building an accompaniment around firstly one note, and E flat, before harmonising it in a very simple manner to allow the Halley 'sounds' to dominate our ears.
