about

The Earth and Heavens Combine
Location: Earth (150 million km from the Sun)
Date: 2012-2015

In this track we have an imaginative combination of sounds and electromagnetic phenomena combined. They include the natural radio ‘sounds’ of our planet recorded both on Earth and in near-Earth space as well as acoustic weather captured in three continents. In this piece we hear the clicks and pops of spherics and the pinging ‘sounds’ of tweaks, both generated by lightning activity on Earth. We encounter the enigmatic, mostly rising, tones of chorus emissions, generated deep within the Earth’s magnetosphere itself during geomagnetic storms and substorms driven by the Sun. We also experience the descending tones of whistlers, signals from lightning activity which have leaked into space and have been guided by the Earth’s magnetic field to their observation point either in space or on the ground. Our musical sound is made up of a piano work that has been reversed giving a disconcerting effect, that also spills out as a spheric might. This is combined with an upright piano that is played with the practice pedal (which covers and reduces the sound levels of the piano hammers by about 80%), to give a very intimate sound.
