about

This is Nigel Meredith's 'sounds of space session', specially curated for The Dark Train, an electronic music radio show run by Kate Bosworth, on Warminster Community Radio.

We start on Earth with music by Letters From Mouse and the Sounds of Space Project, inspired by and including recordings from the Halley VLF receiver. We hear the crackles and pops of lightning spherics, the descending tones of lightning generated whistlers and the rising and falling tones of chorus waves.

We then leave the Earth behind and embark on a journey through the cosmos with tracks by the Sounds of Space Project. We hear compositions inspired by and featuring the ‘sounds’ of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, interstellar space and a galactic pulsar. We finish with a track featuring the ‘sound’ of the merger of two black holes, as evidenced by the first observed gravitational wave, an almost unbelievable ripple in space time that Einstein doubted humans could ever capture!

Nigel Meredith provides commentary throughout explaining the origins of the various sounds and highlighting some of the esoteric instruments used in the recordings.

The full show, which first aired on 20th June 2022, is available on Mixcloud (www.mixcloud.com/katebosworth/wcr-dark-train-ma15-nigel-merediths-sounds-of-space-session-20-06-22/).
