about

On Saturday 14th October 2023 NASA launched its heliophysics big year, a global celebration of solar science and the Sun’s influence on Earth and the entire solar system. To coincide with the launch, we created a special session for the Dark Train on Warminster Community Radio, featuring music from our album Sunconscious.

We start off on Earth, at the Halley VI Research Station in Antarctica, and listen to a track featuring the 'sounds' of space on the day of the first sunrise following the long austral winter.

We then leave the Earth behind and venture out into space to listen to tracks inspired by and including some unusual and fascinating 'sounds' of the Sun as recorded by the Fields Experiment on the Parker Solar Probe, the Michelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and the Radio and Plasma Wave Science Instrument on board the Cassini spacecraft.

We finish where we began and end our journey taking in the 'sounds of space' on the day of the last sunset before the start of the long austral winter.

Nigel Meredith provides commentary throughout explaining the origins of the various sounds and highlighting some of the esoteric instruments used in the recordings.

The full show, which first aired on 16th October 2023, is available on Mixcloud (www.mixcloud.com/katebosworth/wcr-dark-train-ma84-dr-nigel-merediths-sunconscious-session-16-10-23/).
