It’s now mid-afternoon at Halley VI and the fascinating combination of spherics, chorus and plasmaspheric hiss continues unabated.

The music starts with a felt piano, an upright piano played with the practice pedal depressed. This provides a much softer sound, which is captured in detail by the close placement of microphones. As the piece progresses a large number of bell-like sounds enter. These consist of vibraphones and glockenspiels, processed through a digital delay to provide a shimmering effect.

The artwork is inspired by the interconnectedness and beauty of complex space ‘sounds that ‘shimmer’ with a piano and bell-like composition. This is accentuated by layering images of Antarctic glacial forms, some over water, to give a reflection with space data imagery laid down as faint outlines. The result is a crisp unified image. It is cool for sure!
