about

Our journey begins shortly after midnight on 17th June 2012, with the crackles and pops of lightning spherics. At the beginning of the track, before the music starts, these are accompanied by subtle descending tones of two lightning-generated whistlers.

The music consists of a duet between the glockenspiel and a small metallophone that is scraped by a metal rod. It is playful and innocent, allowing us to feel the sense of wonderment that a child might feel listening to these ‘sounds’ in this space for the first time. The piece is in the key of B Major with an emphasis on the interval of the major third.

The artwork for the title track and album cover suggests several key themes that occur in each track but are often barely visible elements in others. Space weather data and snow images from Antarctica are blended digitally. Subtle colour shifts are also added to create ambiguity, as abstraction, of sky and earth. The artwork is an emotional and collective response for the entire album where the ideas of light, white, Antarctica and data are paramount.
