In the Heart of the Storm 8.00 PM

about

We now enter the mid to late evening period at Halley Research Station. This is a very active period with spherics, whistlers, chorus and variable hiss throughout, if anything intensifying as time progresses. The steady hiss, which we have become accustomed to in Tracks 1 to 4, is replaced by hiss which varies in time. This variable hiss pulsates on a timescale of a few seconds and sounds a bit like the breathing of a large, eerie monster, making us wonder if we are being watched. The most intense 'sounds' are heard in minute 13:00-14:00 containing some great examples of chorus and variable hiss.
The piano moves into a more Andalusian space, built on a D minor chord with a minor 9th, a dissonant note that matches the evenings noises. This is a long work, covering 4 hours of Halley time. Flights of fancy move on top of the sounds of Halley before they retreat again to our initial accompaniment figure.
