about

This track features the sound of the Sun’s natural vibrations, sound waves produced by natural turbulence in the plasma near the surface of the Sun. Specifically, what we hear in this track are solar sounds generated from 40 days of the joint NASA-ESA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory’s Michelson Doppler Imager data and processed by A. Kosovichev. The strongest frequency of these natural vibrations is around 0.0033 Hz, which is too low to be heard by the human ear. To make these vibrations audible Kosovichev increased the frequency by a factor of 42,000. After processing, the sound is almost an octave below the middle C of the piano, it surges and maintains a thickness that is almost disturbing in an aesthetic sense, yet it has an implied 3rd harmonic frequency which provides a subtle dimensionality.

Musically we have several ingredients. Kim Cunio is joined by Australian clarinet virtuoso and experimentalist Jason Noble. Cunio plays the piano to the notes of the harmonic series, sets it to an 8 second reverb and reverses it, which creates an intense otherworldliness. This sound is then combined with plucked notes on the bass strings of the piano. Noble is a master of what is described as ‘extended’ techniques on the clarinet. In this work he plays soft mutiphonic progressions (2 or more notes played simultaneously as a melodies at the extreme ends of the instrument), have to be captured with a sensitive microphone as they are very soft in timbre.

The artwork by Scarborough is inspired by the mood and music of the track. This is a landscape that recalls the ochres of Australian earth and the gentler winter skies of elsewhere. Using the traditional media of gouache painted on wet paper as 'soft' layers for digital art creation, despite the pastel colours, the overall mood is one of isolation.
